A Short Film “HOME”
by Naren on October 29, 2008
It was in the year 2004; I wrote, edited and directed my short film HOME. HOME shot within two days became a smash hit at my college, and was also selected for two film festivals: the Fargo Film Festival and the Free Range Film Festival. I became a small time celebrity and was invited to many classes to showcase my film in front of my peers. I have also heard that HOME is being used as an educational resource to all the incoming international students during orientation at my college.
Inspiration behind HOME
I left all I had back in Nepal, to pursue my dreams of becoming a true auteur of cinema. Soon I realized life is not a bed of roses. To make it meaningful, one has to deal with the thorns as well. Similarly, my journey in the United States has not been smooth and easy. With no prior experience in filmmaking even at a basic level, I took the challenges of creating art in cinema. Every day in college, I found myself struggling in the storms of financial hardship, family love and cultural differences.
Where to pour out my frustrations, inner feelings and struggles, and to whom? I knew it was movies - my undying passion and burning desire to it- that drew me here in the United States. So, I thought why I shouldn’t make use of it and at least share something that was within me with others. As a result, I created HOME, which became immensely popular among students, teachers and the general audiences. HOME reflects the story of many international students who leave their homes in search of educational dreams and how they struggle to thrive in difficult circumstances. HOME deals with universal problems such as love, family, and struggle in its own way, and easily appeals to anybody who is missing their home.
The plot
The protagonist, an international undergraduate student, struggles with financial difficulties, long-distance family relationships, and a sense of guilt for having left his soul mate back home. Desperate to make his mother and father proud, he is torn between completing his education in America and flying back to his country to reunite with his long-time girlfriend.
