What is this "RUN"?
Written by Naren on October 28, 2008
My mom used to ask me when I was a kid:
“If someone tells you that a crow flew away with one of your ears, instead of feeling for your ear, would you run after the crow?”
That’s exactly we have been doing. Mindless running after the crow! If not, then why cannot we relax? Not even for a single moment. Even in sleep, we are restless. Why are we always running? Running from what and for what? That also, we do not know. Instead, we are in this panic-stricken state most of our lives, constantly running in all directions, looking for something that is already within us. All we need is to be a little aware and peek inside our own inner being. However, we keep running and running. Somebody is running for fame; somebody is running for God; somebody is running for a big house and a big car; somebody is running for sex.
- What kind of run is this?
- What kind of race is this?
- Are these things going to fulfill our life? Are these things going to make us happy?
- Are these things going to bring growth?
Absolutely not... Why not?
Just like water is needed to quench your real thirst, not soda or pop, you need to be aware of reality to fulfill the void that has surrounded your life. By running madly for things that are not going to quench our inner thirst, we are simply making our lives miserable. We are just wasting our precious energy by seeking things in wrong places.
When we cannot achieve things that we desire, we start dreaming. The poor dream of becoming rich, and the rich dream of more riches. The consequence is such, that now we are so used to living in dreams that we have forgotten the reality. Somewhere in between our mind and our dreams, is buried our capacity to see the reality and the ultimate beauty of life. Our mind has been so corrupted with ego, anxiety and prejudices that we have started assuming dreams as reality.
So, what is reality?
Reality is an immensely beautiful phenomenon. It is the truth of life. And, truth is that moment when you feel alive, free of guilt and ego. Yes, dreams are beautiful and satisfying; but, only while we are asleep. Once, we awaken, we know we have been dreaming. The only way to perceive reality is to not to see through the eyes of your mind. You have to totally surrender your mind to see reality. This is possible only if you drop desires. But, how can you not desire when your whole life’s purpose has thrived on desires and big dreams? A desire to be someone, a desire to amass wealth, a desire to achieve God… It’s an arduous task to get rid of desires. But, it’s possible. You need to make an effort, but again the very effort can pose as a barrier. The best way is simply to relax. Only in deep relaxation can you slow your mind that has been racing madly like a wild horse for all your life. Once you realize that life’s ultimate bliss reigns within you, you will see that you have been running just to accumulate dreams, and that you are just wandering around and around. In that mindless running, you have lost yourself and the capacity to enjoy life. So, take a deep breath, just relax, and set aside your prejudiced mind, you will start feeling the blessings of reality. You will start experiencing the reality of the existence, the beauty of life, and the joy will start flowing to you from all directions.
